Commercial locks work hard

A business lock is used by many people, many times a day, and often on a door that is slammed, dragged or forced shut. It is no surprise that commercial locks wear out faster than residential ones. And because the door itself often moves out of line, a lot of “broken lock” calls turn out to be door problems that only look like lock problems.

We repair the lock and the door it sits on: cylinders, lock bodies, deadlatches, strikes, closers and hinges. That way the fix lasts.

Commercial lock problems we fix

Lock will not throw at closing

The bolt hits the frame instead of the strike, usually because the door has dropped. We realign the door and adjust the strike. See hinge and pivot repair.

Key hard to turn or stuck

Worn pins, dirt or a rotated cylinder. We service or replace the cylinder.

Cylinder spinning in the door

A loose set screw or cam lets the cylinder turn. It is a security risk and an easy fix.

Lever or handle loose

Heavy-use levers sag and loosen. We tighten, repair or replace them with commercial-grade levers.

Deadlatch not catching

Worn springs or misalignment stop the latch catching. We repair or replace it.

Damaged after a break-in

Forced cylinders and bent bolts are replaced, often with stronger hardware. See board-up and break-in repair.

Rekeying for businesses

Rekeying changes the inside of the cylinder so old keys stop working, while the lock itself stays on the door. It is the fastest, most economical way to restore key control when:

  • An employee or manager leaves with a key
  • Keys are lost or stolen
  • You take over a new lease or buy a business
  • A contractor or cleaner no longer needs access
  • You want several doors to work on one key

Keyed alike and master key systems

For stores and offices with several doors and several staff, we can key locks alike or set up a simple master key system so each person carries only the keys they need while a manager key opens everything.

Key control

Restricted keyways make unauthorized copies harder. Ask us about options when you rekey.

Types of commercial locks we service

Narrow-stile storefront locks

Hook-bolt and straight-bolt deadlocks in aluminum doors, with mortise cylinders and thumbturns. See storefront door repair.

Mortise locks

Heavy-duty locks built into steel and wood doors in offices, schools and institutions.

Cylindrical lever locks

Common on office and suite doors; we fit commercial grades built for heavy use.

Rim and exit device cylinders

Cylinders that operate panic hardware from the outside. See panic bar and exit device repair.

Electric strikes and maglocks

Locks tied into access control. See electric strike and mag lock repair.

Hardware for commercial doors is graded by durability; the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association publishes the ANSI/BHMA standards behind those grades.

Why commercial locks fail faster than residential locks

A house lock might be used a few times a day by a handful of people. A store or office lock can be used dozens or hundreds of times, by staff, cleaners, contractors and managers, often in a hurry. Every use wears the pins in the cylinder, the latch springs and the bolt mechanism a little more.

Traffic and abuse

Commercial doors are pushed with carts, slammed by wind and forced shut when they drag. A door that has dropped makes the bolt grind against the strike every night, which wears the bolt and loosens the strike.

Weather

Toronto winters bring salt, slush and freeze-thaw cycles. Moisture gets into exterior cylinders and freezes; salt corrodes strikes and latches; frost moves frames out of line. Exterior back doors and storefronts suffer most.

Cheap hardware on heavy doors

We often find residential-grade locks or levers fitted to commercial doors because they were cheap or quick to buy. They fail quickly under commercial use. Replacing them with properly graded commercial hardware usually ends the repeat calls.

Signs your lock is wearing out

  • Keys need jiggling or a certain angle to work
  • The bolt feels gritty or needs force to throw
  • The lever droops or wobbles
  • The cylinder face is loose or turns with the key
  • You have to push, pull or lift the door to lock it

Locks on different commercial doors

Storefront entrances

Aluminum storefronts use narrow-stile locks built into the door stile. They are strong but sensitive to alignment. A storefront lock problem is very often a pivot, hinge or closer problem in disguise, which is why we check the whole door on every lock call.

Steel back doors

Rear doors on restaurants, stores and warehouses usually have a mortise or cylindrical lock, sometimes with a deadbolt, and often an exit device. They are prime targets for break-ins and need solid strikes, good frames and latch guards. See hollow metal and steel door repair.

Office suites and interior doors

Suite entrances use lever locks or mortise locks, often with access control. Interior offices, storage rooms and server rooms may need classroom, storeroom or privacy functions, depending on who needs access and when.

Exit and fire doors

Locks on exit routes must let people leave without a key or special knowledge. Fire doors must still latch. We choose hardware that keeps both requirements intact. See fire door inspection and repair.

Planning key control for a growing business

Many businesses start with one key that everyone copies, then lose track of who has what. A simple plan solves this:

  1. List your doors and who needs each one.
  2. Group doors by access level: all staff, managers, owners.
  3. Rekey or re-pin cylinders so each group has the right key.
  4. Use restricted keys where copies must be controlled.
  5. Keep a key log and rekey when keys go missing.

We can set this up in one visit for most small and mid-sized businesses.

Commercial lock FAQ

Can you rekey my store locks today?

Usually yes. Rekeying is quick for common cylinders. Call 647-931-0097.

Can all my doors use one key?

If the locks share a compatible keyway, yes. If not, we can replace cylinders so they do.

Is a new lock always needed after a break-in?

Not always, but forced locks are often damaged internally. We inspect and replace what is needed.

Do you install access control?

We install and repair the door hardware (strikes, maglocks, exit devices) and coordinate with your access control provider for readers and software.

Do you work across the GTA?
